Abstract

Background: Laparoscopic appendectomy became the standard surgical technique for acute appendicitis after decades of open surgery at McBurney point. Laparoscopy provides good visualization and diagnostic accuracy. Studies still mention its advantages over the usual technique as short hospital stays, fast recovery, and a low rate of complications.
Aim: To assess the medical outcomes of laparoscopic appendicectomy using two popular stump closure methods– endoloop and hem-o-lok.
Patients and Methods: This study was a 1-year prospective hospital-based cohort research that was performed in the
General Surgery Department of Aswan University hospitals from May 2023 to April 2024, involving the diagnosis of over
60 patients diagnosis of uncomplicated appendicitis. Patients were divided into: group A: that comprised 30 studied cases
managed with endoloop ligature and group B: that comprised 30 studied cases managed with hem-o-lok clip.
Results: There had been statistically significant difference among the studied cases as regard drain usage and complication.
There had been no statistically significant difference among the studied cases as regard any events during follow-up.
Conclusion: Although endoloop ligation and hem-o-lok ligation both offer a solid and encouraging complication profile,
hem-o-lok ligation appears to be at least as effective as endoloop ligation in terms of operating time and potential benefit to
the complication profile. It is an acceptable substitute for endoloop when considering the cost and technological elements.
